Bombing Iran?

It was dangerous George W. Bush style foreign policy when John McCain joked about it.

It’s equally dangerous and just plain bad foreign policy now to be advocating air strikes against a nation when a substantial portion of the population is pushing for change from the inside. Yes, I’m talking to you Insider!

It’s highly refreshing to have a foreign policy that’s smart, strategic, nuanced and is making inroads world wide to repair our country’s reputation after 8 years of the “axis of evil,” wars against countries that didn’t attack us, nonsensical bravado and Texas trash talk.

FBI Apparently Investigating LCPS Land Acquisitions

In 2007 we had news of an FBI investigation into various members of the now defeated Republican Board of Supervisors. Today we learned that the FBI is turning its attention to the Loudoun County School Board. Pretty soon the Soil and Water Conservation Board will be under investigation by the FBI.

Here’s the story on the school system from the Center for Public Integrity.

In recent weeks, several local residents and county employees have confirmed to the Center that they have been interviewed by FBI or Education Department investigators regarding the Wheatland matter and other LCPS land acquisitions. The U.S. Department of Education inspector general’s office has jurisdiction over federal funds spent by local school systems. Federal officials declined to comment about their on-going investigation.

Many of you questioned the Wheatland deal for being an overpriced deal hatched by insiders. Maybe it was and maybe it wasn’t. But I think it’s a good thing that our federal investigators are taking seriously the concerns of the citizens and at least trying to put pressure on our elected officials to walk a straight line.

That’s all very serious and I’ve been trying to have a light hearted week here. So, let’s discuss who the winners and losers are as a result of this announcment. Does this announcment help anyone? And who is going to take the most heat?

Just Say Yes …. to Irreverent and Unabashed Sex Education?

A reader sent in this interesting little factoid at The Huffington Post about Bob McDonnell’s slogan.

The Republican Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Virginia Bob McDonnell has chosen as a campaign slogan, a phrase used by the Coalition for Positive Sexuality (CPS) to promote “irreverent and unabashed sex education” for teens.

The former Attorney General, heading into the general election following an un-opposed primary, announced that he would be traveling the state on what he deemed the “Just Say Yes” tour. When he accepted the GOP nomination on May 30, he used the same phrase repeatedly to chastise the opposition as a bunch of do-nothing pessimists.

It is a rhetorical flourish that has been compared to Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can,” used during the 2008 president campaign.

The only problem is, well, Google.

Type in “Just Say Yes” into the search engine and the results that come back don’t exactly resemble the platform of a GOP gubernatorial candidate from Virginia. The phrase is the title of a group that helps equip “youth to lead healthy and successful lives.” It also, however, is the slogan for CPS’ safe sex and sexual openness campaign.

“Just Say Yes is about having a positive attitude towards sexuality — gay, straight, bisexual or whatever,” reads the site. “It’s about saying ‘yes’ to sex you do want, and ‘no to sex you don’t. It says there’s nothing wrong with you if you decide to have sex, and nothing wrong with you if you decide not to.”

The Shad Plank has more, including how the CPS Just Say Yes campaign promotes water-based lubrication. Seriously.

What do you get when you mix Dick Black, Ice Cream, Suzanne Volpe and Cigarettes? A Tag Greason Event

You gotta hand it to those radical social conservatives. They know how to throw a party!

In the latest sign that Tag Greason’s campaign is having trouble moving forward, this little anecdote is being spread around. You might remember a month or so ago that I pointed you to Tag Greason’s website where he was trying to marry himself to the social right GOP base. It apparently wasn’t a tactic, it’s real. At a recent ice cream social Greason put on for his campaign that was organized by radical Patricia Phillips, a speaker at the event was none other then the disgraced Dick Black. Out of all the possible surrogates, Greason and Phillips picked Dick Black? This isn’t Alabama, this is Loudoun County and Dick Black’s politics of hate and divisiveness have proven to be unacceptable to the Loudoun population.

But the very fact that Greason was having an “ice cream social” seems very family-friendly. It’s better than a cocktail party. Setting an example for kids and getting them involved in politics at an early age seems to be a nice gesture.

Which brings me to Suzanne Volpe.

The Aftermath

The Aftermath

The local Republican that some in the post below are suggesting should one day lead Loudoun Republicans was tasked with dolling out ice cream to all the little kiddies. Seems like an easy enough task. So she stood there with Greason, Black, Phillips and the rest of the far-right enjoying the sun and refreshing ice cream and chain smoked as she passed out the treats to the kids.

What a picture! With Dick Black preaching “family values,” Suzanne Volpe is delivering ice cream to kids with one hand and inhaling a Virginia Slim in the other!

What’s more is this little story has been floating around local GOP circles. Which makes me wonder if another battle for control of the LCRC is upon us?

Deeds Victory Speech

“If I’m given this extraordinary opportunity, every single day you will have a governor who is always on your side.”

It’s hard not to believe future Governor Deeds when he says that.

Deeds v. McDonnell

Congratulations to Creigh Deeds for pulling off quite the turnaround in the primary. Just a few weeks ago I don’t think anyone thought this was possible. How did it happen?

More than anything else, I think the endorsement from the Washington Post helped tremendously. Northern Virginia voters who probably didn’t know Deeds all that well felt more comfortable with him. And now we have a rematch from four years ago. But this time Deeds will have more money and far more known Democratic voters after the massive registration effort during last year’s presidential primary.

Kincora Stadium Gets Cold Review

The on-again, off-again  Kincora project is on again as you probably know. Right now it just seems to be a minor league baseball stadium, though I could be mistaken because there have been about 193,000 iterations of Kincora. Minor league baseball could be a great addition to the county and maybe even at the proposed location. But the piecemeal process that is taking place is no way to do business.

This has been the strangest process I’ve ever seen. The developer has something like 29 unresolved issues on the baseball stadium special exception but they are trying to get this passed on the fly without the usual review. The stadium is being expedited while a larger rezoning is supposed to follow? I don’t think the planning commission has weighed in on the project. There’s supposed to be a Route 28 study taking place.

The idea from the developer must be to make the stadium the issue in the hope that enough elected officials will want to support baseball. It doesn’t seem to be working. The BOS gave Kincora a cold review Monday at a public input session. The stadium proposal is going to committee though it doesn’t really appear there was support from the supervisors for the project.

RPV Convention: Your GOP Nominee for Lieutenant Governor

Bob Holsworth writes that the decision will be about energy solutions of the past versus energy solutions of the future.

It’s coming.

This fall.

You won’t want to miss it.  Heck, you won’t to be able avoid it.

It’s Green Jobs vs. Drill Baby Drill.

The previews are running right now.

Newt was in town last night for Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, arguing that offshore drilling could enable Virginia to be a major energy supplier on the East Coast.

Both McDonnell and Bolling are drill baby drill people.

I’m waiting for a GOP rally in October with Sarah Palin at Virginia Beach.

Easy choice. I’ll be voting for green jobs.

I’m also curious who the readers here will be supporting in the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor. And if you’re a Republican, who would you rather have face Bolling. Be honest, I’m pretty sure a few opinions here aren’t going to sway the primary!
